How do I stop cats walking on my car?

Oranges and Lemons… Maybe?
I happend upon a possible answer to this problem while talking to the owner of a gun shop! It seems that he often has people in his shop asking to buy air rifles, and when he asks them what kind of shooting they want them for, the answer is often that it’s to “keep the cats of the fish pond”.
I’m not recommending buying a gun, but it does appear that cats hate the smell of oranges and lemons and the gun shop owner advised putting orange peel around the garden… using this information to your advantage isn’t so easy, especially as many fragrances come in oil form which may not be suitable to put on your car and may actually cause damage to paintwork or plastics. And you don’t really want to be decorating you car with orange peel.
Cats walk across cars to sit on the bonnet or roof to bask in the sun, if you can deter them from wishing to use your car as a sun lounger then they will have far less reason to put their muddy little paws all over your paintwork. However, I have yet to come up with a good way of applying the fragrance to the car, if anybody can think of a good way, please let me know. I do know there are some citrus cleaners available, and some products are scented with lemon or orange, but these tend to be interior products.
In the mean time, please don’t shoot cats!
