How do I get back the new-car-smell?

Car Valeting, Detailing and Car Care Advice       July 19th, 2006     by Danny the web stig

That new car smell is caused by the solvents evaporating from new plastics. I have actually been told by a few people that this smell is actually bad for you because of course you are breathing in the solvents!

Filling your car with solvents is obviously out of the questions, so a replacement fragrance is needed.

Several manufacturers have produced a New Car Fragrance, but none I have tried to date have been very convincing. An alternative is the the smell of leather which is very leather like. An effective way of putting fragrance into your car so that it lasts is to suspend the fragrance into an essential oil and put the oil on dense felt or carboard blocks which are then fixed to hidden areas of the interior such as under the seats. This method can make the fragrance smell for up to a year!

For us men, it may be worth considering that women have a much more sensitive sense of smell than us, and they have very different ideas about what smells good and what doesn’t. I’m sure Anna will have some more to say on this subject in the near future.
